Links, books, and other things I love – July 2015

AROUND THE WEB

BOOKS WORTH READING

  • Unoffendable: How Just One Change Can Make All of Life Better by Brant Hansen.
No offense, but a lot of us need this book. We’re too easily offended, too sensitive (I know I am). Brant Hansen is laying it down that God doesn’t want us to be that way.

  • Some of My Best Friends are Black: The Strange Story of Integration in America by Tanner Colby.
There is still MUCH more to learn about the history and present position of integration in our schools, our neighborhoods, our businesses. Or lack thereof. Interesting and informative book.

  • To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others by Daniel H. Pink.
Like it or not (and I don’t, by nature), we all are salesmen of some sort as we go through life. Daniel Pink makes this subject intriguing.

  • In my daily Bible reading, I just finished Jeremiah 10 in the Old Testament, and Acts 16 in the New Testament.
  • Reviews of books I finished in June are here.

THINGS I LOVE

  • Evernote
    12 unusual ideas for Evernote
from Michael Hyatt. Even though I don’t utilize Evernote as well as I should, I love shoving stuff into it, knowing it’ll be there when I want it.

  • 1 Second Everyday
Have you heard about this video app? Record one second a day (I’m doing it for the month of July), and then mash it all together into a video. Listen to founder Cesar Kuriyama explain it on NPR or watch his TED talk here:

  • 70s & 80s music
Jeff and I saw Boston—one of my favorite groups from years ago—(and Starship, formerly Jefferson Starship, formerly Jefferson Airplane) in concert a few weeks ago. It was both fun and funny to see basically the same crowd that came 40 years ago, plus a few youngsters who heard about them from their parents, I suppose.
  • Scripture Typer
If you memorize Bible verses, Scripture Typer is one of the handiest tools. I use it again and again to learn new verses and to retain older ones. There’s also a phone app but I use it mostly on my laptop.

  • Patience metaphor
I saw this beautiful illustration on Jean Wise’s blog about waiting patiently. Artwork by Melanie Weidner, based on the saying by LaoTzu, “Do you have the patience to wait until the mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving until the right action rises by itself?”

LOOKING FORWARD TO

  • July 4th with Morgan
We always celebrate the 4th of July and our wonderful America on the lake with my in-laws. I’m thankful our oldest daughter Morgan is coming!

  • Jenna is coming home!
Then later Saturday night, our youngest daughter Jenna returns home from Guatemala! Thanks for all those who have been praying for her as she ministered in the orphanage at Casa Shalom and who have been reading along in Jesus Calling with us these past 6 weeks.jenna-guatemala-2015
  • The last one!
Before Jenna left, she gave me this jar of candy—one Junior Mint for every day she’d be gone (and a jar of Spree’s for Jeff). I’ve been eating one daily, marking the time. I’ll eat the last one tomorrow! (I will miss the candy, can’t deny that, but I’ll be ecstatic to have her home!)

What a neat idea to have candy in a jar to mark the days until someone comes home!

I have not yet figured out Evernote, though I keep hearing it is wonderful.

Happy 4th, and I hope you have a wonderful time with your family!

Once you take the plunge into Evernote, I think you’ll love it, Barbara. There’s a slight learning curve but nothing drastic. Just think of it as an expanded Pinterest. 🙂 Hope you and your family have a wonderful 4th too! I wonder what Timothy will think of the fireworks this year. Some kids love them; some hate them.

  2. June

Great stuff, Lisa! I just spent way more time that I should have checking out these links, lol! Love that patience example, I never really thought of it in those terms before. Happy Friday!

I can get trapped in linkland too and spend way too much time going from one to the other. 🙂 So much interesting stuff out here! Hope you have a great 4th of July, June.

I really, really liked the jar metaphor for patience. I’m a big fan of *visuals.* One reason I liked it, too, is because sometimes it really does take time for the “mud to settle.” Situations and relationships can get all confused and muddled sometimes, and the gift of time, and waiting on God’s timing, often leads us to a perfectly clear resolution.

    GOD BLESS!

I’m all about visuals too, Sharon. Yep, we’d all be wise to spend a little more time waiting before we try to fix things ourselves. Easier said than done! Happy

great round up of ideas and thanks for the mention. So glad your daughter will get home and love the jar idea. What a neat idea. Please be sure to share her experiences with us some time. would be interesting to hear. Enjoy her homecoming.

Jenna does have some sweet stories and some heart-breaking stories from her time in Guatemala. She’s glad to be home but still misses being there all at the same time. We all can understand that. I hope to share some stuff soon.

Hi Lisa! So many good things here! I also read Jean’s blog and loved the dirt in the water metaphor. And I’ve just started to follow Michael Hyatt, so I haven’t seen the Evernote info. Not even sure what it is. He really helps me get up to speed!

Great news about your family coming back. I LOVE the idea of the candy-a-day thing. How sweet! (on so many levels!!) My husband never remembers his phone number. I always have to tell him!
Hope you had a happy 4th,
    Ceil

I’ve followed Michael Hyatt for awhile—he always has some great tips on a variety of things. They’re not always applicable to me so I rarely listen to his podcasts, but occasionally there will be one that is spot on. The Evernote one was so good. He has a lot of Evernote posts on his blog too if you’re interested in getting started with it.
