Six Books I Recommend – September 2017

Here are six books I recommend from what I read in September. Once a month we share our current reading lists at Jennifer’s.

6 Books I Recommend

Books I Recommend

Nonfiction

1. The Power of Moments
Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact
by Chip and Dan Heath

Power-of-Moments-The

Fantastic book. It will make my top 10 list of this year. It explains why certain brief experiences can change us, and how we can be more intentional about creating those peak moments. It’s written by the authors of Made to Stick, Switch, and Decisive. I love everything they write, this included.

2. Organizing Solutions for People with Attention Deficit Disorder
Tips and Tools to Help You Take Charge of Your Life and Get Organized
by Susan C. Pinsky

Organizing-Solutions

Don’t let the title fool you. This book is for anybody who wants to get better organized, not just those with ADHD. I consider myself fairly organized as is, but I learned more small things I can do that could make a big difference. Now to make time to do them.

3. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?
And Other Questions You Should Have Answers to When You Work in the White House
by Alyssa Mastromonaco

Who Thought This Was a Good Idea

I enjoy books that go behind the scenes. This one is written by the former deputy chief of staff to President Obama. She tells stories of her time in the West Wing, on Air Force One, and her many busy days in the White House. Very interesting.

Fiction

4. The Light Between Oceans
by M. L. Stedman

Light Between Oceans, The

My neighbor Savannah recommended this one before we went to Maine because I told her we wanted to see lighthouses. Good choice! It’s the story of a young couple who become light keepers in Australia in the early 1900s. When the wife Isabel has trouble carrying a child, the plot takes a very interesting turn.

5. The Almost Sisters
by Joshilyn Jackson

Almost Sisters, The

I enjoyed this book set in Alabama. The heroine Leia Birch Briggs deals with an aging grandmother, racist neighbors, and her own dysfunctional family.

6. The Tiger’s Wife
by Téa Obreht

Tiger's Wife, The

This one was a little strange, but interesting. The setting is a Balkan country after years of war. Natalia, a young doctor, walks through the years with her grandfather and circumstances back and forth in time.

Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? sounds really interesting. I’ve heard that The Light Between Oceans is good but haven’t tried it yet. I like finding new organizing solutions but do better with one at a time rather than a whole book of them. But, I suppose the book could be taken in that way – just reading a bit at a time and implementing that before moving on to the next.

  2. Pam

Always love your suggestions, Lisa. The Power of Moments certainly goes on the list of books to read. Currently, I am delighting in reading Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry with Michele Morin and her crew. It has proven delightfully inspiring. I am also reading Fiercehearted by Holley Gerth and will be starting Fire Road by Kim Phuc Phan Thi shortly.

My reading has slowed down for obvious reasons (to me at least). I am reading “War of Words” by Tripp and have his book called “Forever” in my cue. I just finished rereading a fiction book called “Echoes of Titanic” by the Clarks. I needed some diversionary reading. Jo & I are going on vacation in one week so I plan to take a couple of leisure reading books.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew I had to come by, Lisa! Thanks for some good TBR add-ons! I have not read even one of these…nor any on your list of current reads. WOW! Thanks.
    Take care, ~ linda

  5. Sj2b House of Books

Not read any of your other choices except The Almost Sisters which I loved. It was intelligent, serious, quirky and funny. Great choice!

I also have Born a Crime as a to read…not sure when I’ll get around to read it, but I look forward to hearing what you thought next month.

I am reading 4-Tendencies too, and I LOVE Roxanne Gay, so this book I think I’d love too- maybe a bit heavy- eager to see what you think. I liked Light Between Oceans a lot- it has stuck with me- the premise and characters. I put the “Power” book on my TBR pile but maybe the organizing one would be better, since I am so scattered- and could use all the help I could get! Fun month for you~
